Midsummer Moving Stumps
In this production of Midsummer Night’s Dream I was asked to set the play in an under ground bunker with a seampunk style. I wanted to keep the sense of the magical woods within these design bounds and was able to design and engineer pillars which grew out of the ground covered with a stretchy fabric to look like stumps. Each of the stumps had three different heights so that we could create many different looks and locations, allowing the lovers to be lost in the woods.
The system I developed used a 12′ tall pillar which was lifted by a rope with a double purchase pully system. once the pillar was raised a structural box of the appropriate height was slid under the pillar to provide support for the actors sitting or standing on top.
