Teaching Statement

It is important to me as an educator to facilitate my students to think critically about the problems that they face throughout my courses. Theater has such a rich history of invention and innovation that it is important that my students have an understanding of that history. By providing them with this base foundation and then using interactive projects, I seek to drive creative use of this knowledge to spur innovation.

To engage my students to think critically within my classes I seek to provide knowledge with not only the “what” of the subject but the “why” as well. Whenever possible it is important that the reasons why, whether it is the reason we use close eye bolts when lifting, or why a 2×4 isn’t really 2” x 4”, the why is at the forefront of the conversation. This helps to catalogue the knowledge in a way that it can be used for creative and innovative endeavors. With the constant advancement of technology it is important that the students are understanding the reasoning behind current and past techniques because this knowledge will be what helps them build the future of the industry.

As a teacher I endeavor to engage my students in hands-on learning as often as possible. Theater is a practice that takes place in the rehearsal room, during tech, and at production meetings. I seek to envelope the students I teach in the process of making live theater at every turn. I also serve as a mentor and model of the ways a professional should work in the industry. By modeling professional courtesy and industry best practices I am teaching my students at all times the skills to be successful in the entertainment industry.

When working with technical students our assessments whenever possible take place in the context of real world projects for the theater. I have the luxury to be working at institutions which are constantly producing live content. Whether it is my students for scenic construction putting together pieces for the upcoming set, or my intro to rigging class prepping and hanging elements, this practical experience is the best place to assess my students. By using real events in this way it helps the students take a sense of ownership to the work that they are performing.

I am a large proponent of embracing new technologies, from CnC shop bot cutting, to 3d printing. I use this technology as often as possible. There is a place for traditional tried and true techniques but it is always thrilling to find new ways to use emerging technology. I have dabbled in many areas such as VR scenic renderings, spatial sound mapping and am always up for the challenge of incorporating new and emerging technology into the performance arts. This passion for learning new things is only equaled in me by my passion to share this new found information with those around me. I am excited at the possibility of bringing students along on my journeys into the newest technologies.

Moreover, I am committed to continual professional development, regularly updating my knowledge and teaching methods to reflect the latest advancements in theater technology and pedagogy. I am deeply committed to creating an inclusive and equitable learning environment. I strive to meet the diverse needs of all students, employing differentiated instruction and culturally responsive teaching practices. By valuing and respecting each student’s unique perspective and background, I foster an environment where all students feel valued and empowered to succeed.

Ultimately, my goal is to prepare students for successful careers in technical theater. By providing a rigorous, hands-on education combined with strong support and mentorship, I help students build the skills, confidence, and professionalism needed to excel in the industry. Through continuous reflection and adaptation of my teaching practices, I ensure that my students are well-equipped to meet the demands of the future theater landscape. My teaching philosophy is grounded in engaging students through hands-on, experiential learning, fostering an inclusive environment, and embracing innovative pedagogical practices. By doing so, I aim to inspire and equip the next generation of technical theater professionals to thrive in their careers and contribute meaningfully to the world of theater.
